Ever-changing Data
- Headlines
This page contains brief information on recent astronomical discoveries as reported in the International Astronomical Union Circulars (IAUCs) (published by the Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams) and the Minor Planet Electronic Circulars (MPECs) (published by the Minor Planet Center), as well as links to ephemerides and orbital elements for comets and minor planets.
- Visual Satellite Observer's Home Page
If you've ever spent some time star gazing shortly after sunset you've probably noticed one or two 'stars' gracefully sailing across the sky. These are orbiting satellites of various types and ages, visible due to the reflection of the Sun's light off their surfaces towards the observer.
Their tasks cover fields such as communications, astronomy, military applications and remote sensing - meteorology, geology, geography, climatology, etc. Furthermore the orbits they trace can point to the condition of the upper atmosphere, the structure of the Earth, and the nature of the solar cycle.
Whether a satellite is visible to a given observer or not is dependent upon several factors; knowing these details may aid an observer in determining the most favourable times for sightings, and is most certainly necessary in order to spot some of the more elusive targets which speed across the heavens.
This page gives this information and more.
- Aurora Predictions
This plot shows the current extent and position of the auroral oval in the southern hemisphere, extrapolated from measurements taken during the most recent polar pass of the NOAA POES satellite.
This presentation provides an estimate of the location, extent, and intensity of aurora on a global basis. For example, the presentation gives a guide to the possibility that the aurora is located near a given location in the southern hemisphere under the conditions that existed at the time of the most recent polar satellite pass.
- Heavens Above
If you're interested in satellites or astronomy, you've come to the right place!
Our aim is to provide you with all the information you need to observe; satellites, the International Space Station, the Space Shuttle, the dazzlingly bright flares from Iridium satellites, as well as a wealth of other spaceflight and astronomical information. Many people don't even realize that satellites can easily be seen with the naked eye. We not only provide the times of visibility, but also detailed star charts showing the satellite's track through the heavens. All our pages, including the graphics, are generated in real-time and customized for your location and time zone.
